Why the chip fraction deserves its own sourcing decision

Inside a growbag, cocopeat provides water holding and capillarity; the chip share sets drainage, aeration, and structural life. Growers running long fruiting crops on drip irrigation feel the chip fraction every day: it determines how fast the bag drains to target, how the profile rewets after dry-back, and whether the bag still has structure in month eight.

Buying “coir with some chips in it” hands those properties to chance. Buying a screened chip fraction (4–8 mm, 4–12 mm, or 4–16 mm) and blending to a recipe keeps them under your control.

The specification points that keep recipes stable

  1. Particle range and tolerance. Name the grade and state what share of out-of-range particles you accept.
  2. Dust and fiber limits. Fines behave like cocopeat; an unspecified fines share silently shifts your air–water curve between shipments.
  3. Moisture at loading. Affects real material per tonne, loosening behavior, and volumetric dosing accuracy.

  5. Packing configuration. Block dimensions per pallet, pallet spec, and container loading, confirmed at quotation so your intake planning is real.

Intake format: blocks almost always, but check

Manufacturers buying at container scale overwhelmingly take the compressed 5 kg block: freight density pays for the loosening line many times over at volume. Qualifying a chip supplier as a manufacturer

  • Sieve-test samples against the declared range, and keep a sealed reference.
  • Ask how grading is done and what the process looks like. A supplier should be able to show it, as we do on our process page.
  • Agree the specification in writing at quotation and make it the reference for repeat orders.
  • Validate with a trial container before committing a program; availability of trial volumes is confirmed per order.
  • Watch communication quality: recipe problems get solved by suppliers who answer in parameters, not reassurances.
