What compression actually does
Pressing chips into a nominal 5 kg block does one thing: it removes air from the freight. A container of blocks carries more usable material than a container of loose chips, which is why the block format dominates long-distance trade in coir products generally. The cost of that density is a preparation step at destination: blocks must be loosened mechanically or by hydration before the chips can be used, depending on the application.
How much a block expands and how it behaves during preparation depends on grade, compression, and method. Those figures belong in a product specification, not a marketing page, which is why we confirm them at quotation rather than publishing generic ratios.
Decision factors, one by one
Freight economics
The longer and more expensive your route, the harder compression works for you. Buyers moving full containers across oceans usually find the block format pays for its preparation step. For shorter routes or part-loads, the gap narrows, so quote both and compare landed cost per usable volume.
Storage
Palletized blocks stack densely, predictably, and high; the same material loose needs several times the floor area. If warehouse space is tight, blocks win. If you have cheap covered space near the point of use, loose storage may be no burden.
Labor and equipment
Blocks assume a loosening step: machinery in a media factory, or manual breaking and soaking in smaller operations. Loose chips assume none. Price your own labor honestly: a format that saves freight but jams your workflow is not cheaper.
Workflow fit
- Blocks suit: growing-media factories with loosening lines, growbag producers, importers redistributing regionally, buyers with irregular draw-down who value stable stored material.
- Loose suits: nurseries potting continuously, retail packers filling bags, operations without equipment, and buyers who want zero preparation between delivery and use.
Water in the workflow
If your preparation route is hydration, you are adding water handling: space to expand, drainage, and moisture management before blending. Dry-loosening avoids this but needs machinery. Loose supply sidesteps the question entirely.
A worked way to decide
- Estimate annual volume in usable material terms.
- Ask us to quote both formats to your port, same grade and same specification.
- Add your destination-side costs: storage area, loosening labor or equipment, water handling.
- Compare cost per usable cubic meter into your process, not per tonne on the invoice.
Two buyers with identical volumes can rationally choose differently because their warehouses and labor markets differ. That is normal.
Can you run both?
