Coco Husk Chips as Orchid Growing Medium
Orchid roots want air as much as water. Coco husk chips build the open, slowly degrading structure that epiphytic and semi-terrestrial orchids are commonly potted in.
Most cultivated orchids (Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Cattleya, Vanda and many others) are grown in media that would be far too coarse for ordinary crops. Their roots are adapted to clinging to bark and absorbing moisture from humid air, so growers pot them in chunky materials that leave large air channels between particles.
Coco husk chips serve this role well: each chip absorbs and releases moisture through its fibrous body while the gaps between chips keep the root zone ventilated. Compared with some traditional bark media, coconut husk chips wet up readily after drying and break down slowly, which is why orchid nurseries and media packers around the world include them in their programs.

Which grade to consider

Orchid nurseries repotting by hand often prefer loose chips that are ready to use, while media packers importing at volume tend to choose compressed 5 kg blocks for freight efficiency.
