
Chip size is the most consequential choice you make when specifying coco husk chips. It sets the air space, drainage speed, moisture behavior, and physical texture of whatever the chips end up in. This guide gives you a decision framework and is honest about the limits of what size alone can promise.
The three grades at a glance

Five questions that decide the grade
1. What does the plant’s root system expect?
Epiphytes and thick-rooted plants (orchids, many aroids) evolved around air and tolerate, or demand, coarse, open media. Fine-rooted crops generally want closer contact with moisture, pushing you toward smaller chips or a lower chip share.
2. How big is the container?
Particle size should scale with pot size. Large chips in a small liner leave voids that roots cannot bridge and water bypasses; small chips in a huge tub add little structural benefit. As a rule of thumb, the bigger the container, the coarser the chip you can carry.
3. How will it be irrigated?
Frequent drip or automated irrigation tolerates (and often wants) a coarse, free-draining profile, because water arrives on schedule. Hand-watered or rain-exposed plantings benefit from finer chips that buffer between events. Coarse grade plus infrequent watering is the classic mismatch.
4. What else is in the blend?
Chips rarely work alone. In a cocopeat-heavy blend, the chip grade controls how much openness survives the fines; in a bark or perlite blend, chips add water-holding the other components lack. 5. What does your process require?
Bagging lines, hopper feeds, and retail presentation all have particle preferences. Reptile-bedding packers, for example, often specify size for appearance and handling as much as function; see reptile bedding substrate.
What size cannot decide for you
- It does not guarantee crop outcomes. Size shapes physics: air, water, structure. Yield and quality depend on your whole system.
- It does not replace trials. Two operations with the same crop and different climates can land on different grades. Run material through your own setup before committing a season.
- It is not the whole specification. Dust and fiber share, moisture, washing, and packing still need to be agreed. The quality page lists the full parameter set.
Still between two grades?
That usually means either grade could work and the blend ratio will matter more than the range, or that a mixed-grade order is worth discussing. Describe the crop, container, irrigation, and blend in your inquiry, and we will say plainly which grade we would trial first. Both formats, 5 kg blocks and loose, carry all three grades.
