Coco Chips vs Cocopeat: Which Fraction Does What?

Coco husk chips and cocopeat come from the same husk but behave differently in substrates. Structure, water behavior, and how blenders combine the two fractions.

Coco husk chips and cocopeat start life in the same place, the fibrous husk of a coconut, and end up doing opposite jobs in a growing medium. Understanding the difference is the fastest way to read any coir-based substrate recipe, because almost every one of them is a negotiation between these two fractions.

What each fraction is

Coco husk chips are cut. A husk goes through a chipping machine and comes out as roughly cubic pieces, in our case screened to 4–8 mm, 4–12 mm, or 4–16 mm. Each chip keeps the husk’s dense, layered fiber structure.

Cocopeat (coir pith or coir dust) is the fine, spongy material left when husk fiber is extracted or milled. Its particles are small and highly absorbent, packing into a soft, moisture-holding mass.

Neither is “better.” A pure-chip medium drains hard and dries fast: right for orchids, wrong for a moisture-hungry seedling tray. A pure-cocopeat medium holds generous water but can suffocate roots in deep containers. Recipes exist to find the point between.

How blenders combine them

  • Chip-dominant blends for orchids, aroids, and epiphytes: chips carry the structure, a modest cocopeat share adds moisture buffering. See orchid media and aroid mixes.

The ratio is the buyer’s decision; it depends on crop, container, climate, and irrigation. What a supplier owes you is a chip fraction consistent enough that the ratio you validated keeps behaving the same way.

Sourcing implications

Because the fractions do different jobs, they are specified differently. For cocopeat, buyers concentrate on EC, pH, and compression. For chips, the emphasis shifts to particle range and the share of dust and fiber, because a “chip” product heavy with fines behaves half like cocopeat and will quietly change your recipe.
