How Coco Husk Chips Are Made

From whole coconut husks to screened, dried, and packed chips. The production stages behind coco husk chips, illustrated with real photos from the supply process.

Every coco husk chip was once part of a coconut’s protective shell. Between the palm and your potting bench sits a production chain that is simple to describe and demanding to run consistently. This guide walks through it stage by stage; the photographs are from the actual supply process behind our chips.

Stage 1: The husk

Coconuts are harvested for food, water, and oil; the husk (the thick fiber jacket around the nut) is the raw material of the entire coir industry. In coconut-belt regions like Indonesia, husks accumulate wherever coconuts are processed, arriving at chip producers by the truckload. Quality begins here: reasonably mature, reasonably clean husk makes consistent chips.

Stage 2: Chipping

Whole husks are fed through chipping machines, bladed cutters that reduce the fibrous shell to rough cubes. Cutting geometry and husk condition determine the shape and integrity of the chip: a good chip is a coherent piece of husk, not a bundle of loose fiber. The output is a mixed stream of sizes plus a share of fines that later screening will separate.

Stage 3: Drying

Fresh chips are far too moist to store, press, or ship. Producers spread them across open-air drying yards, raking and turning the layer so the tropical sun does the work. Weather makes this the least controllable stage of the chain and a real scheduling factor. It is one reason honest suppliers talk about availability being subject to production rather than promising fixed capacity.

Stage 4: Screening into grades

Dried chips are screened into defined particle ranges. Ours are 4–8 mm, 4–12 mm, and 4–16 mm. Screening is what turns a commodity into a specifiable input: buyers blend recipes around a size range and need each shipment to match the last. The share of dust and fiber remaining after screening is a specification point buyers should always raise, because it changes how the material behaves in a blend.

Stage 5: Packing, loose or compressed

From screening, chips take one of two routes. Loose chips are packed as they are, ready to handle at destination. Block-format chips go through a press that compacts them into nominal 5 kg rectangles, a purely logistical transformation that lets a container carry more material, undone by loosening or hydration at the buyer’s end.

Stage 6: Palletizing and export

Blocks are stacked and strapped on pallets, wrapped, labeled to the order, and loaded into containers by forklift with a final inspection inside the box. Documentation follows the agreed terms; phytosanitary and destination-country requirements are verified per shipment. From here the material is in the logistics system, weeks from a greenhouse, nursery, or packing line somewhere else in the world.
